Historic Downtown Quito Tour (4 hours)

Ecuador is history, fascinating indigenous cultures, slow and winding rivers, lush rainforests, spectacular views of snow-capped volcanoes, and the most exciting wildlife on the planet. Quito is the place to start. It is a city of narrow cobblestone streets and white carved walls, which soar the domes of numerous churches rich in history and spectacularly decorated. This city has one of the best-preserved colonial centers in South America, to the point that in 1978 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will tour the Plaza de la Independencia where we will see the Government Palace and some of the most important churches built around the XVI and XVII centuries, including La Compañía, the Monastery of San Francisco, which began to be built 5 days after the city was founded in 1534. The next stop will be at Panecillo, a hill from where you will appreciate the south of the city and where you will have the opportunity to meet Our Lady of Panecillo while enjoying a spectacular view.

Free day.

Spend the day in Quito at your leisure, exploring the city or simply taking some time to enjoy the beautiful weather and natural surroundings. We recommend enjoying one of our excursions:

* Optional excursion to Quilotoa: today we will visit the Quilotoa volcano crater, where we will be able to appreciate the serene and mysterious green crater lake. We will have the option of a short hike of approximately 1.7 kilometers / 1.1 miles along the crater rim. On the way back, we will stop to visit an art gallery in the community of Tigua, where we can appreciate paintings representative of the folklore of this part of the Andes. The brightly colored style of the local artists, now the third generation, has transcended local borders and is now internationally renowned.

* Optional excursion to Mindo: Leaving Quito after an early breakfast at your hotel, we stop at the volcanic crater of Pululahua (optional) to take a look at the crater with its mosaic fields far below on the crater floor. When we arrive at Bellavista Cloud Forest Reserve, we will climb to the top of the mountain, once again with fabulous views, enjoy the hummingbird flurry, or hike through the forest on the reserve's variety of trails. An incredible one hundred and seventy species of birds have been recorded at Bellavista, and the list continues to grow: Tanager - finch, Giant Antpitta, Swallow-tailed Nightjar, Plush-capped Finch, Beautiful Jay, and White-faced Nunbird can all be found here, while everyone gets excited about the brightly colored tanagers and the silvery mountain toucan.

* Optional excursion to Cotopaxi National Park: We will visit Cotopaxi National Park where weather permitting, you will be able to see the snow-capped peaks of the Cotopaxi and Antisana volcanoes. We will also visit the interpretation center to learn about the history of the great eruptions of this spectacular volcano and the local flora and fauna. We will then visit Limpiopungo Lake and explore the surrounding area on foot. If you feel like a longer hike, a 2-hour hike will take us to the Mt. J. Ribas de Cotopaxi refuge (4,800 m) where you can enjoy spectacular views of the volcano and surrounding Andean peaks.
