Board the Eastern & Oriental Express at Singapore in the afternoon and settle into your elegant private cabin. The whistle blows and the train departs, heading across the Causeway into Malaysia and the lush countryside beyond. An indulgent afternoon tea is served as you admire the exotic scenery outside your window. Take time to explore your surroundings and chat with your fellow guests. An exquisite dinner is served in one of the opulent dining cars, after which you may choose to enjoy a nightcap in the Bar Car and listen to the resident pianist playing entertaining melodies. Retire to your cabin, now converted into a cosy bedroom by your personal steward.
After breakfast, we have a range of options for you to choose from. Alight to explore the vibrant metropolis or verdant surroundings of Kuala Lumpur on one of our enthralling tours. Alternatively, stay on the train and enjoy a selection of relaxing activities.
1. A Cultural Tapestry

Your classic guided walking tour starts at historic Independence Square (Dataran Merdeka) where, on the stroke of midnight, 31 August 1957, independence from British colonial rule was declared. Leaving the square, we proceed to view the majestic Jamek Mosque (Masjid Jamek), the city’s oldest mosque dating from 1909, which features Moorish-inspired architecture. Your next stop is Sin Sze Si Ya, the oldest Chinese temple in Kuala Lumpur, which was constructed by craftsmen from southern China. A fine example of a traditional Chinese temple, it boasts an ornate interior and elaborate roof. Nearby you can experience the dazzling array of sights, sounds and scents at one of Malaysia’s oldest wet markets.
2. Kampong Traditions and Crafts

Gain an insight into Malaysia’s diverse lifestyles, traditions and crafts. Your tour begins at Pudu Market, one of the largest traditional wet markets in the capital. Wend your way through narrow lanes of tightly packed, bustling stalls to see the vast array of fresh meat, fruits and vegetables on offer. Next, head to the Heritage Trust of Malaysia (Badan Warisan), where a Trust member will show you around a village leader’s traditional wooden house (Rumah Penghulu Abu Seman) and give you a fascinating glimpse into early-1900s domestic life. Finally, enjoy a taste of kuih bahulu, dainty cakes that are a favourite among Malaysians of all ages and one of the key delicacies of the Eid Festival.
3. Cycle Tour of Hidden Kuala Lumpur

Join an enthusiastic local team for a private cycling tour in the heart of the capital. Pedal to the city's oldest settlement, Kampong Bharu, a century-old, rustic Malay village in view of the iconic Petronas Towers. Admire the traditional timber houses and mosques, sample delicious street food. Continue to Chow Kit Market, one of the city’s oldest and busiest wet markets. Learn about spices and herbs used in Malay cooking and visit the ancient Sikh temple nearby.

After your enriching morning, gather in the dining cars of the Eastern & Oriental Express for lunch. Relax on board in the afternoon and prepare for the evening’s sumptuous dinner, served as your journey continues towards Penang Island.
Breakfast is served in your cabin before the day's adventures begin. Alight from the train at Bukit Mertajam, where you will transfer to George Town, Penang. Here you can choose from the following excursions:
1. George Town Living Heritage Hunt

Despite being a modern, 21st-century city, George Town is still home to many traditional artisan crafts including millinery, Chinese engraving, weaving, stonemasonry and shoe-making. Its unique craft heritage is one of the reasons why it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site and such a fascinating place to visit. This self-guided tour tracks down some of the lesser-known crafts and gives you the opportunity to try your hand at joss stick and flower garland making, gold melting, Chinese seal engraving and sign carving, or to simply wander through the streets witnessing the 'living heritage' of George Town.
2. Taste of Penang

Discover Penang’s rich culinary heritage on a journey with Nazlina, a self-taught cook and food enthusiast with readers from all over the world. Join her on an exciting morning tour of George Town’s best local markets, gathering delicious produce and learning about local customs. After that visit Nazlina’s renowned Spice Station and enjoy a Malaysian cooking demo.
3. George Town’s Colonial Legacy

In the company of knowledgeable local guides, experience the grandeur of 19th-century Penang and learn about the fascinating history of its capital, George Town. This classic guided tour starts in front of Penang City Hall, a landmark colonial building, and continues with a trishaw ride through the vibrant streets, passing St George’s Church, the first Anglican church to be constructed in Southeast Asia. Among the many highlights, you will visit the prominent Chinese clan house, Koo Kongsi, stroll along the Street of Harmony, where every religion is represented in a place of worship, and enjoy a guided tour of the charming Pinang Peranakan Mansion.
Rejoin the train for lunch and soak up views of the lush, green countryside as we approach the Thai border. This evening’s entertainment begins with a traditional Thai dance performance and is followed by a spectacular celebratory dinner created by Executive Chef Yannis Martineau. Soon it is time for the exciting New Year countdown, accompanied by a DJ and fireworks.
